The European Commission has signed a landmark contract with the SpaceRISE consortium to implement IRIS², a state-of-the-art multi-orbital satellite system. This initiative, the EU’s third flagship programme, aims to strengthen Europe’s sovereignty, security, and resilience through a constellation of 290 satellites in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) and Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
IRIS² will provide secure connectivity for EU governments, deliver high-speed broadband to underserved areas, and enhance Europe’s technological leadership. Led by SES SA, Eutelsat SA, and Hispasat S.A., the SpaceRISE consortium includes key European subcontractors, SMEs, and innovators, fostering collaboration across the region.
Under a 12-year public-private partnership, the project will deliver governmental and commercial connectivity services by 2030, funded by the EU, ESA, and private investors. IRIS² is poised to bridge connectivity gaps, ensure resilience, and solidify Europe’s position as a leader in secure satellite communications.
